As the journey of pregnancy and birthing can be a mixture of excitement and challenges, it’s crucial for Black birthing families to have a support system in place. Community Partners is a proud fiscal sponsor of i.D.R.E.A.M. for Racial Health Equity, and its community led intervention, Black Mamas Glowing, a virtual peer support group specifically designed for Black birthing Mamas and Mamas birthing Black babies in Greater Los Angeles and surrounding counties.
Celebrating 30 years, i.D.R.E.A.M. for Racial Health Equity, is committed to the urgent call for leadership, advocacy, training, and community service on behalf of Black birthing families. Serving 200 families since 2020, Black Mamas Glowing is a village of sisters, aunties, grandmothers and extended family members, successfully integrating a safety net for the Black perinatal workforce through community resources, patient navigators, doulas and birth compassions.
“The work we do is so impactful. Black Mamas Glowing is a safe sacred space for Black women/birthing people to share their experiences, learn about their bodies, and witness the joy a village brings when new life comes to Earthside. There is no feeling greater than being able to serve the community in such an accessible and meaningful way.” Ellen Branch, Assistant Program Manager, Black Mamas Glowing
Through its strong collaboration with a diverse group of stakeholders, including Community Partners, Black Infant Health, Providence Southern California Region, healthcare providers, and local organizations, this innovative program is successfully addressing the significant disparities in infant mortality rates among Black communities, and expanding its reach and holistic care for Black birthing families. Through their unique pregnancy peer support group experience, a 4-part, virtual, weekly series, expecting Mamas will receive education, resources and a safe space for sharing experiences, seeking advice, and building connections with others who are going through similar challenges.
“Yesterday was the last session Black Mama’s Glowing and I want to thank you again for introducing me to this group. It was very informative and provided a lot of resources and support. Ellen Branch is soooo knowledgeable, she was lit, lol! Baby K and I are on week 28 and can’t wait to meet him (still working on my fear of labor lol).” Black Mama Glowing May cohort participant
